The Environmental Protection Agency is opening a 90-day public comment period on its proposal to retain the current national ambient air quality standards for lead. The agency Jan. 5 will publish a proposed rule to retain the primary and secondary standards of 0.15 mi-crogram per cubic meter, which were set in 2008 (46 ER 8, 1/2/15). The EPA is seeking comment on various aspects of the proposal, including EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy's proposed decision that "appreciable uncertainty" associated with the health benefits of a more stringent standard is too great for evidence to support revising the primary, health-based lead standard. The agency's proposed rule (RIN 2060-AQ44) is consistent with recommendations by agency staff and the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee that the current standards are adequately protective of public health and welfare.
