The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has approved rule and policy changes (Rules 522 & 523) significantly increasing penalties for violations of the state's drilling regulations. The commission voted Jan. 5 to increase maximum daily penalty amounts from $1,000 to $15,000 for each violation of commission rules, as well as eliminate a $10,000 penalty cap per violation. The rule changes also make penalties mandatory in most cases when oil and gas operators violate drilling and permitting requirements.
