The year 2014 was the warmest on record, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA announced Jan. 16. The global annual average temperature was 13.9 degrees Celsius (57.0 degrees Fahrenheit), which was 0.69 degree Celsius (1.24 degrees Fahrenheit) above the 20th century average. That is the highest annual average since records began being kept in 1880 and beats the previous record temperatures recorded in 2005 and 2010 by 0.04 degree Celsius (0.07 degree Fahrenheit), the administration said.
