摘要

The country's biggest technology companies are working to shrink the water footprint of their data centers as customer demand for being online and in the cloud continues to skyrocket. Water use at data centers hasn't received as much attention as their rapidly growing appetite for energy. But data centers also can be pretty big water users, depending on where they are located and the type of cooling they use. Data centers consume water in two ways: indirectly during the production of electricity used to power the data center, and directly for cooling the air inside to offset the heat generated by servers and other equipment. A typical data center can use hundreds of thousands of gallons of water a day, according to estimates from Google Inc. That is roughly equivalent to the daily residential water use of thousands of Americans. In some cases, a data center's water needs can exceed the capacity of a local water utility. Peak water demand for data centers also tends to coincide with peak demand for personal and agricultural use in the summertime.
