Rain running off pavement with coal tar-based sealants can be toxic to aquatic species at the base of the food chain, according to a study of the sealants announced by the U.S. Geological Survey. A second study found that stormwater runoff from coal tar-based pavement sealants damages the DNA of fish cells. The USGS announced both research findings April 13. The laboratory studies involve newly applied coal tar-based sealants. For many decades, the black liquid has been sprayed or painted on parking lots, driveways and playgrounds to protect the underlying asphalt and to fill in cracks in roadways. USGS: High Levels of PAHs in Sealants. According to the USGS, pavement sealants that contain coal tar have extremely high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Coal tar is a known human carcinogen, several PAHs are probable human carcinogens and some are toxic to fish and other aquatic life, the USGS said in a news release. Coal-tar sealants have significantly higher levels of PAHs and related compounds, compared with asphalt-based pavement sealants and other urban sources, including vehicle emissions, used motor oil and tire particles, USGS said.
