Maryland is on track to meet the EPA's nutrient and sediment reduction mandates for the Chesapeake Bay by the 2025 deadline but will need to tap private financing to keep the pollution loading down in the long term, according to a new study. Thereport from the University of Maryland's Environmental Finance Center (EFC) recommends that the state develop a financing process that maximizes the return on dollars invested in nutrient and sediment reduction by leveraging the marketplace and the private sector. Better engagement between the public and private sectors is essential to making the investments necessary to keep nutrient and sediment loading down as the state population grows, the report says.
