More than 100 members of Congress are urging the Energy Department to establish separate product classes with different efficiency standards for residential furnaces, saying the standards recently proposed by the department could hike costs for consumers and undermine some efficiency goals. In a letter sent June 8 to Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) and 120 other representatives said "the rule will significantly increase costs to natural gas consumers, force them to switch to less-efficient alternatives, and ultimately undermine the efficiency goals that underlie the Energy Policy and Conservation Act."
