The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration should make sure that Volkswagen AG did not receive any benefits under the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards after outfitting diesel engine cars with technology that allowed them to cheat on emissions tests, Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) said. In a letter sent Oct. 29, Markey urged the agency to conduct a re-analysis of Volkswagen's diesel engine cars to determine the fuel economy the vehicles would have been able to achieve if they had used compliant emissions control systems. The use of defeat devices, which allowed the affected vehicles to pass emissions tests even though they emitted as much as 40 times more pollution than permitted under actual driving conditions, helped Volkswagen avoid installing pollution control technology that typically reduces fuel economy performance, Markey said.
