The Environmental Protection Agency's final accounting framework for carbon dioxide emissions from biomass-fueled power plants should be based on "sound science," 91 scientists told the agency. The agency should reject the "flawed assumption" that bioenergy is inherently carbon neutral because there is a growing body of science that shows that burning trees and other plant material to generate electricity increases carbon emissions and contributes to other air pollution problems, the scientists said in a June 19 letter to the EPA. The letter comes as the agency concludes a three-year deferment period used to gain a better understanding of the effect of biomass's carbon emissions while it considers regulating facilities that burn biomass.
