摘要

Melting sea ice and other impacts of a changing climate likely will be among the top issues the U.S. focuses on during its upcoming chairmanship of the Arctic Council, a State Department official said June 25. David Balton, deputy assistant secretary of state for oceans and fisheries, said he believes "some large feature of the U.S. chairmanship," which runs from 2015 to 2017, "will involve climate issues." The Arctic is warming faster than any other region on Earth, posing environmental, economic and national security risks in the region and globally. Climate change is also driving growing commercial interests in the Arctic as melting ice makes resources like oil, gas and fish accessible and transshipment possible.
