The Albertsons grocery chain has settled a lawsuit filed by various southern California agencies alleging the illegal disposal, transportation, storage and mismanagement of hazardous wastes for $3.38 million (California v. Albertsons LLC, Calif. Super. Ct., No: 30-2104-0072502-CU-TT-CJC, settlement 6/24/14). Albertsons LLC will pay $2.7 million in civil penalties, $350,000 into the state fund that finances supplemental environmental projects and $300,000 to cover investigation costs, according to the June 24 settlement. According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, costs to the company will go beyond the $3.38 million, given that "the terms of the settlement require Albertsons to pay additional, substantial costs for developing and enforcing compliance efforts above and beyond the legal requirements," including computerized classification systems, dumpster audits, employee training and five years of progress reports to the prosecuting agencies.
