摘要

Freedom Industries will begin dismantling its Charleston, W.Va., above-ground storage tank farm-the cause of a nine-county drinking water crisis-by the end of June, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection. Demolition of 13 storage tanks at the Etowah River Terminal site will be monitored by the West Virginia DEP, agency spokeswoman Kelley Gillenwater told Bloomberg BNA June 23. The demolition is expected to take two to four weeks. Statewide monitoring of above-ground storage tanks, under legislation triggered by the chemical leak into the Elk River, also began this month, Gillenwater said, and thus far 446 tanks are in the DEP system In January, a leaking AST owned by Freedom Industries released an estimated 10,000 gallons of 4-methylcyclohexane methanol (MCHM) into the Elk River upstream from a West Virginia American Water intake portal, prompting a "do not use" order for 300,000 people in nine counties.
