Wal-Mart, Facebook and 10 other major U.S. corporations have called on regulators, utilities and other energy providers to make it easier for them to purchase renewable energy. The companies released a set of principles July 11 outlining what changes they want to see to fix issues such as the difficulty of accessing cost-competitive renewable energy options and the complexity of contracts for buying or investing in renewable energy. The 12 companies have a combined target of getting 8.4 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy from solar, wind and other renewable sources per year through 2020.
