Expected Chesapeake Bay water quality improvements are threatened by heavy phosphorus loading from Maryland's largely agricultural Eastern Shore region, where the eight tidal tributaries contain as much or more phosphorus than they did a decade ago, the Environmental Integrity Project said in a new report. Heavy phosphorus fertilization there contributes to algae blooms and resulting low-oxygen "dead zones" in the bay, the environmental group said July 14. The problem demonstrates the need for the administration of Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) to require that farmers measure soil nutrient levels before applying new fertilizer, the EIP said.
