Charges that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is covertly permitting disposal sites for wastes from hydraulic fracturing operations, thereby putting water supplies at risk, is "a gross mis-characterization," the agency's spokesman told Bloomberg BNA. Responding July 16 to allegations from the Fresh Water Accountability Project, Mark Bruce said sites questioned by the group are regulated under temporary "Chiefs Orders" from the department, issued only after thorough engineering and environmental review. The nonprofit accountability project said it wants the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to assume enforcement authority over Clean Water Act programs in Ohio because state agencies cannot "ensure compliance with federal anti-pollution laws."
