Contaminants from Pharmaceuticals, personal care products and other sources are widespread in leachate from solid waste landfills, a study released Aug. 11 by the United States Geological Survey concludes. The chemicals most frequently identified in the study include: 1. bisphenol A found in 95 percent of samples, used to make plastics and resins; 2. cotinine, detected in 95 percent of samples, formed from nicotine; 3. N,N-diethyltoluamide, an insecticide known as DEET, also found in 95 percent of samples; 4. lidocaine, found in 89 percent of samples, used as a local anesthetic and in anti-itching products; and 5. camphor, detected in 84 percent of samples, used in a variety of medicines and lotions.
