摘要

The Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed that it is developing water quality criteria to monitor for bacteriophages as an indicator for the potential presence of pathogenic viruses. "Our goal is to have criteria completed by the end of calendar 2015," the EPA said in an Oct. 2 e-mail to Bloomberg BNA. Bacteriophage is a virus that infects bacteria, such as E. coli, a highly infectious strain that can cause colitis, kidney disease and death. Disease outbreaks are associated with drinking water contaminated with E. coli. The EPA said it is considering the use of bacteriophages to detect the presence of pathogenic viruses, such as the norovirus that causes nonbacterial gastroenteritis.
