Decades of progress in reducing nutrient pollution to the Chesapeake Bay is beginning to level off, and more work is needed to meet targets by a 2017 deadline, a senior Chesapeake Bay Program scientist told bay state legislators and regulators Nov. 7. Rich Batiuk, associate director of science at the bay program, told a meeting of Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia officials that the bay states will collectively miss the 2017 deadline for implementing 60 percent of their nitrogen-reducing policies and practices necessary to restore the bay's ecosystem.
