If the United States wants more wind and solar energy, it would be wise to support the continued development of natural gas from shale, according to Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. Moniz pointed to the complementarity of gas-fired electric power plants as one of many reasons to support the development of unconventional gas, which primarily includes shale gas but also gas from "tight sand" geologic formations and gas from coal seams. Moniz, only three weeks in the job, fleshed out the idea of an "all of the above" energy strategy as he spoke June 11 to a conference on energy and environmental issues organized by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).
