District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray (D) has announced that he will introduce legislation to prohibit the use of coal for combustion in the nation's capital. Gray June 6 announced the Ban on Combustion of Coal Act of 2013 the same day the District Department of the Environment issued four permits allowing construction of what DDOE called two highly efficient co-generation systems in the U.S. Capitol Power Plant-the only coal-fired major source of air pollution in Washington, D.C.
