The California Department of Fish and Wildlife proposed emergency rules June 7 to clarify its regulatory definition of suction dredge mining in an effort to uphold the state's ban on the practice. The altered definition would close a loophole in the state's fish and wildlife regulations that mining companies have used to modify suction dredge mining equipment so that their activities are not covered by the ban. "The Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has determined ... that an emergency exists and the proposed emergency amendment to existing regulation is necessary to address a situation that calls for immediate action to avoid serious harm to the public peace, health, safety or general welfare," the department said in a statement.
