The Energy Department is proposing energy efficiency standards for electric motors that it says would save consumers $23 billion in energy costs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 400 million metric tons over a 30-year period. The standards would set either first-time or more stringent requirements for a range of motors used in applications that include furnace fans, driving compressors, elevators, escalators and pumps for irrigation and municipal water and wastewater systems.
