Republicans on a House-Senate conference committee Feb. 2 urged the panel to block new air pollution rules for boilers and incinerators as it works to extend the payroll tax cut through the end of 2012. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) told fellow members of the conference committee that a delay of the boiler rule, like the payroll tax cut extension (H.R. 3630), would boost the economy and save jobs. Blocking the Environmental Protection Agency rule, which would curb mercury and other air pollutants emitted by industrial boilers and incinerators, would save jobs that would likely be lost if industry has to comply with the EPA emissions limits, Upton said.
