The payroll tax cut bill is the only legislative vehicle for extending the production tax credit for renewable energy until the end of the year, industry executives said Feb. 8. The next opportunity would likely be during the lame-duck session, but by then the industries would have already abandoned projects and manufacturers would go out of business, the executives said. "The manufacturers will have already shuttered their plants," Peter Kelley, vice president for public affairs at the American Wind Energy Association, said at a press briefing. "The urgencv of this issue calls for extending it in the first quarter of this year because later will be too late."
