The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved the five-year transportation authorization bill Feb. 3 but withdrew a provision that would have allowed the president to waive environmental reviews for critical infrastructure projects. The committee withdrew the presidential waiver provision from the bill but agreed to develop more tailored language that could be reinserted into the legislation later. The committee rejected several other Democratic amendments that sought to preserve existing reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act as they approved the $260 billion American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act (H.R. 7) 29-24.
