摘要

A group of Gulf Coast environmental organizations Feb. 2 filed a lawsuit in federal court against Taylor Energy Co. LLC of New Orleans, alleging the company failed to plug a well that leaked an estimated 4,000 gallons of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico since 2004 (Apalachicola Riverkeeper v. Taylor Energy Co., E.D. La., No. 2:12-cv-337, 2/2/12). The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana by the Tulane Environmental Law Clinic on behalf of the Waterkeeper Alliance, the Louisiana Environmental Action Network, the Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper, and other partners. The organizations filed their lawsuit under citizen suit provisions of the Clean Water Act and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The plaintiffs asked the court for an injunction restraining Taylor Energy from leaking, discharging, or disposing of oil from the wells into the Gulf of Mexico. The plaintiffs seek civil penalties of up to $37,500 per day for violating the water act and RCRA.
