FirstEnergy Corp. said Feb. 8 it will close three coal-fired power plants in West Virginia, blaming the Environmental Protection Agency's mercury and air toxics standards and other environmental regulations for its decision. FirstEnergy said it will close the plants, which have a combined capacity of 660 megawatts, by Sept. 1. All of the generating facilities belong to FirstEnergy's Monongahela Power Co. (Mon Power) subsidiary, acquired in 2011 when the Akron, Ohio-based company purchased Allegheny Power. The soon-to-be retired plants are the Albright Power Station, which went online in 1952; the Willow Island Power Station, opened in 1949; and the Rivesville Power Station, which started generating electricity in 1943. The plants represent about 3 percent of FirstEnergy's total regulated and competitive generating portfolio.
