The Vermont House has approved a bill (H. 464) that would impose a three-year moratorium on hydraulic fracturing for natural gas exploration. The measure, approved by voice vote Feb. 1, had been amended a week earlier by the House Committee on Fish, Wildlife, and Water Resources to remove a requirement for a permanent ban. Gov. Peter Shumlin (D), prior to the vote, said, "I do not think there should be fracking for natural gas in Vermont." In video comments posted on his website Jan. 27, Shumlin said, "I don't think Vermonters want chemicals pumped into the ground to extract natural gas," adding that he does not believe there is much natural gas in Vermont.
