The Senate on March 14 passed a two-year, $109 billion reauthorization bill (S. 1813) for federal transportation programs that includes a number of environmental provisions, including measures that would divert funding from underground storage tank cleanups, dedicate financing for Gulf Coast ecosystems, and protect oceans and coastal areas. Final passage of the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) Act, by a 74-22 vote, represents a milestone in the reauthorization process, which had been held up several times in the Senate over amendments.
