Existing dams in the United States have the potential to add more than 12 gigawatts of electricity generating capacity if equipped to produce hydropower, according to a report released April 17 by the Department of Energy. That figure represents roughly 15 percent of current U.S. hydropower capacity, and is enough electricity to power more than 4 million homes, according to the report, An Assessment of Energy Potential at Non-Powered Dams in the United States.
