Depletion of the ozone layer over the Arctic has reached an "unprecedented level" this spring due to continued concentrations of ozone-depleting substances and extreme cold in the stratosphere, the World Meteorological Organization said April 5. The U.N. agency said observations from the ground and air as well as from satellites show the Arctic region has suffered ozone loss of about 40 percent from the start of winter through late March. The previous record ozone loss was 30 percent over an entire winter, WMO said.
