Smart electricity grids could help to reduce peak demand load by 13 percent to 25 percent by 2050 and slash electricity-related greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by more than 2 billion metric tons per year by that date, the International Energy Agency said April 4. However, developing these grids will require aggressive investment in large-scale regional pilot projects, accommodated by global standards and regulatory changes, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka told reporters.
