The U.S. Supreme Court April 4 granted a motion allowing Kansas to pursue action against Nebraska for alleged violations of a 68-year-old water-use agreement involving the Republican River in the Great Plains (Kansas v. Nebraska, U.S., No. 22ol26, Original, 4/4/11). The court appointed a special master to hear evidence in the case, in which Kansas alleges that Nebraska overused water from the Republican River during a two-year period from 2005 to 2006 in violation of an interstate compact that also includes Colorado.
