ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler (D) has released two fact sheets targeted to landowners whose properties sit above the natural-gas-rich Marcellus Shale formation and might be approached by energy companies seeking leasing rights to drill for gas using hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking." One of the documents, "Leasing Your Land for Natural Gas Drilling—Tips for the Landowner," identifies several topics landowners should inquire about before entering into a drilling lease. Another, "Dormant Minerals Interest Act—Questions and Answers," highlights provisions of the Maryland statute enacted in 2010 to help uniformly determine who holds the rights to certain mineral interests.
