A Nuclear Regulatory Commission task force July 19 called for requiring enhanced safety measures in the license applications for new nuclear power plants that are currently pending before the commission. The task force, composed of six experienced commission employees, was established four months ago following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex on Japan's northeastern coast and led to significant radiation leaks.
