The federal government has filed a lawsuit against a barge owner and a tugboat operator seeking reimbursement for nearly $25 million in cleanup costs stemming from a 2008 collision and spill of almost 283,000 gallons of oil into the Mississippi River (United States v. American Commercial Lines LLC, E.D. La., No. 2:ll-cv-02076, 8/22/11). D.R.D. Towing Co. was in charge of operating the tugboat Mel Oliver as it pushed an oil barge upriver. Both vessels were owned by American Commercial Lines. The tugboat crossed the path of the tanker Tin-tomara headed in the opposite direction. The tanker struck the barge, splitting it in half.
