A 62-year-old coal-fired power plant located a few miles from the White House is expected to permanently close down by Oct. 1, 2012, under an agreement between Alexandria, Va., and the power plant's operator, GenOn Energy. In announcing the agreement Aug. 30 to close the Potomac River Generating Station, Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille said it "strengthens Alexandria's future and opens the door to an enhanced quality of life for our residents."
