摘要

The Environmental Protection Agency joined with 16 water, health, and environmental organizations Nov. 9 in signing a memorandum of understanding to reduce water pollution and public health risks by improving the performance of decentralized wastewater systems. Inadequately treated sewage from decentralized systems, also known as septic or onsite systems, poses risks to human health and the environment, according to EPA. Following the signing, James Hanlon, director of EPA's Office of Wastewater Management, told BNA the stepped-up effort represented by the MOU is important because improved design and maintenance of such septic tanks is "critical" to improving and restoring water quality.
