The Department of Energy set the first energy efficiency standards for small electric motors in a final rule published in the Federal Register March 9 (75 Fed. Reg. 10,874).rnThe rule, which takes effect in 2015, applies to polyphase, capacitor-start induction run, and capicitor-start capacitor-run small electric motors ranging in motor power output from 0.25 horsepower/0.18 kilowatt to 3 horsepower/2.2 kilowatt. Those motors are typically used for certain pumps, fans, compressors, and other general industrial equipment.
