This year's Gulf of Mexico "dead zone" is one of the largest measured there in the past 25 years, covering an area about the size of Massachusetts, but it is not specifically linked to BP Picrnoil spill, researchers from the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium and Louisiana State University announced Aug. 1.rnThe oxygen-starved hypoxic zone now covers 7,722 square miles in the northern Gulf of Mexico, extending from west of the Mississippi River delta into Texas waters well past Galveston Bay and far offshore, the consortium said.
