Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's Oct. 12 decision to lift the ban on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico was greeted as welcome news by the energy industry and by Gulf Coast lawmakers desiring an economic boost for the hard-hit region.However, drilling proponents say they are worried about a de facto moratorium if the Interior Department unnecessarily delays issuing new drilling permits that will be required for deepwater exploration to resume.rnOnly those rig operators who can meet the government's new standards on safety and the environment will be allowed to resume operations.
