Tim Kaine (D) has asked Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to postpone the sale of lease rights to explore for oil and natural gas on a parcel of seabed located off Virginia's coast.rnThe governor, who is also chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said a delay of lease sale 220 would be in keeping with Salazar's 180-day extension of a comment period on a proposed five-year program for oil and gas development on the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf.rnThe Interior Department published a notice in November initiating a process designed to result in lease sales for the Virginia parcel in 2011 (39 ER 2273, 11/14/08).rnKaine recommended that the Minerals Management Service begin leasing parcels only after a plan for energy development for the entire coast is completed. The governor also said he has consistently opposed "singling out a particular state for a lease sale."
