The Department of Agriculture announced $144.3 million in loans and grants April 21 for infrastructure improvements to increase the availability and quality of water in 56 rural communities in 34 states.rnThrough its rural development program, the Agriculture Department funds water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the country to protect the environment and improve the health of rural residents. The department said the program's mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents.rnFor example, the German Township Sewer Authority in McClellandtown, Pa., has been selected to receive more than $5.5 million in loans and grants to construct a wastewater collection system along with pumping and treatment facilities to replace malfunctioning and deteriorating systems.
