The Alaska Department of Fish and Game on April 7 rejected a petition to grant the Kittlitz's murreiet, a small seabird that forages in waters near tidewater glaciers, protection under the state's Endangered Species Act.rnThe department determined that the Kittlitz's murreiet, though its numbers have fallen sharply in the core habitat areas, did not warrant protection under the formal terms in the state law, Doug Vincent-Lang, the department's endangered-species specialist, said April 10.rn"We just felt that we hadn't reached that threshold where the continued existence was threatened," Vincent-Lang said.rnWhile populations in core areas such as Glacier Bay and Prince William Sound have declined precipitously, there is insufficient information about populations elsewhere to make a determination about the overall viability, he said. Unlike the federal law, the state law does not allow listings to be based on models or projections of population trends, he said.
