Lansing, Mich.-The federal government will speed up purchases of new cars for its fleet, buying about 17,600 fuel-efficient American cars before June 1, providing a boost to struggling U.S. automakers and the environment, the Obama administration said April 9.rnThe General Services Administration has "moved faster than any time in its history" to get the purchases underway, the White House said.rnObama said on March 30, when he directed General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC to speed up their restructuring plans, that he would order GSA to accelerate its fleet purchases (40 ER 745, 4/3/09).rnReplacing older vehicles with new, fuel-efficient American cars "will help stimulate the economy, support the auto industry, and achieve energy-efficiency goals," the administration said.
