President Obama announced May 5 his intent to nominate Homer Lee Wilkes as under secretary for natural resources and environment in the Department of Agriculture. The post oversees the U.S. Forest Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Wilkes, currently Mississippi's state conservationist, is a 28-year veteran of the NRCS, the primary federal agency helping private landowners conserve, maintain, and improve their natural resources. The appointment requires Senate confirmation.
