A run Majumdar, President Obama's nominee to lead a new research agency within the Department of Energy, was approved by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Oct. 14.rnIf confirmed, Majumdar, whose nomination was approved by a voice vote, would be the first director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, which aims to foster research and development of highly experimental long-term energy technology.rnThe agency, modeled after the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is credited with developing unmanned aircraft and stealth technology, was established in 2007 but received no funding until it was appropriated $400 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Pub. L. No. 111-5).rnMajumdar faced little opposition during his Oct. 8 confirmation hearing, during which he touted the potential of advanced energy projects that could take five years or longer to develop.rnAt the confirmation hearing, Majumdar emphasized the vital role he believes clean, efficient energy sources will play in the U.S. economy.
