A manufacturers' association and an array of environmental advocacy groups signed an agreement Oct. 13 to support tougher federal standards for energy efficiency for residential central air conditioners, furnaces, and heat pumps.rnThe agreement calls for regional standards, reflecting the different cooling and heating needs of different climatic zones. The deal also calls for more stringent building code provisions for new construction.rnWhether higher efficiency becomes a requirement will depend on federal legislation or Department of Energy regulatory decisions, or both.rnThe agreement was reached between the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), a trade association of manufacturers, and a number of environmental groups, including the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, the Alliance to Save Energy, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships, and the Appliance Standards Awareness Project. Also signing the agreement were more than a dozen furnace and air conditioner manufacturers, the California Energy Commission, and the Northwest Power and Conservation Council, a four-state energy and environmental planning agency.
