摘要

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated the energy bill (S. 1462) approved by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will increase the federal deficit by a net $13.5 billion over the next decade.rnSpokesmen for Sens. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the committee chairman and ranking member, respectively, told BNA Oct. 9 that the senators are well aware that the cost of converting to a low-carbon, clean-energy economy will not be cheap.rnThe bill's price tag "is higher than what some people expected, but they weren't caught off guard completely," said Bill Wicker, Bingaman's committee spokesman. "A lot can happen as the bill moves through the process."rnThe CBO cost estimate was released Sept. 30.rnThe Senate energy bill, which was approved in June with bipartisan support (40 ER 1417, 6/19/09).rnIt will be merged with a carbon cap-and-trade bill (S. 1733) being written by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (40 ER 2282, 10/2/09).
