The Coast Guard published a final rule Oct. 13 updating regulations on equipment that must be installed to minimize oil pollution from bilge water in keeping with the specifications of the International Maritime Organization (74 Fed. Reg. 52,413).rn"All vessels replacing or installing oily-water separators and bilge alarms must install equipment that meets these revised standards," the Coast Guard said in the final rule.rnThe rule also requires newly constructed vessels carrying oil in bulk to install monitoring systems that meet the international standards, the Coast Guard said. The rule makes permanent interim regulations issued in January (40 ER 177, 1/23/09).rnThe equipment standards in the final rule were modified from the Jan. 16 interim rule in one way, through modification of three paragraphs to allow more time for a changeover from existing equipment that is less than 5 years old.
